There is hardly anything more frustrating and discouraging than to have your screen freeze right in the middle of your favorite video game.  A glance at the console power button will generally tell the story – there are three red lights flashing around the button, signaling a very serious problem. This has been a too-common occurrence with the Xbox 360 game console.  Until the error is fixed or the console or power supply replaced, the Xbox cannot be used.

Fix Red Light on XBox ProblemOne way to handle the problem is to buy one of the many e-books that will explain how to overcome the Three Red Lights Error.  These guides generally sell from about $25 to $30, and promise that you will be able to fix your Xbox 360 in an hour, or even less.  While these may offer a solution, there are also steps you can take on your own that may fix the problem.

If the Three Red Lights Error is actually signaling that there is defective hardware in your Xbox, you will be unable to fix it yourself.  As Microsoft has extended the guarantee to three years, you will probably just be able to return the Xbox for repair or replacement.  The only cost in this case will be postage.  You will have to wait 2 to 4 weeks for your Xbox 360 to be returned to you, however, so trying the steps below might help you to fix the Xbox yourself.

If the three red lights start flashing, the first thing to do is to look at the power supply box.  This has a light on it that will indicate whether, and how, it is working.  If the light is green, it means that some power is getting to the power supply, but it may not be getting into the console.  Unplug the console from the power supply and the power supply from the wall socket.  Then, plug everything back in again, very firmly, as often the problem is caused because the connection was not really made.  If the power supply light is still green, but the three red lights are still flashing, there is indeed something wrong in the console and you will have to put in a request for replacement.

However, if after re-plugging, the power supply light is not on at all or is red, it might indicate that the electric supply to the room in which the console is plugged in is insufficient to power the Xbox 360.  This can be tested by taking the Xbox to another room and plugging it in there. Do not use a circuit breaker strip; you need to have the current fed directly into the power supply and console to see whether this is the problem.

When the sockets in another room do not solve the problem, the three red lights are still flashing, and the power supply light is still red on not on, it is possible that the power supply has overheated.  Unplug it and let it cool for a half hour or more.  Once the power supply has cooled, try plugging it into the console again.  If the power supply light is still red, the power supply is defective and must be replaced.  Once again, you will have to contact Microsoft to arrange for a replacement of the power supply and possibly the console itself.

Fix the Red Light on XBox Problem Today

Although designed to enhance gaming experience and fun, the Xbox 360 has presented a number of problems, the most serious of which is the Three Red Lights Error.  This is also called the Red Ring of Death, as it can mean that the Xbox will soon cease to function at all.  The Three Red Lights Error means that there is a problem with the hard drive.  There are steps that can be taken to try to remedy this at home.

While the problem could lie in the console’s hardware, there is also the possibility that your power supply is what is causing your difficulties.  To check any possible power supply issues, turn on your Xbox and look at the power supply light.  If the light is green, there are two things you can do, the first of which is to look at the power supply cables, since it is possible that they just are not connected correctly or completely.  Unplug them, then plug them back in, and make sure they are fully plugged in, too. You should then turn the console on again and check the lights.  If the three lights are still red, you will have to send in a request for console repair.

If the Three Red Lights Error shows up, you need to check the power supply box.  Now, if the light is red, or if there is no light on at all, you will need to unplug everything, then re-plug all the plugs firmly.  The console should be turned on again and the lights around the power button should be checked. Three Red Lights flashing around the power button will tell you that the problem is not yet solved, but there are still several things that can be done to possibly correct the difficulty at home.

Take your Xbox 360 into another room to plug it in.  Sometimes, the power in one room is just not sufficient to power the console and this is why it is not working.  When you do this, plug the power supply directly into the wall — a surge protector should not be used.  Once all the plugs are firmly seated, turn on the console and look at the light on the power supply.

If the Three Red Lights are still flashing, it could mean that the power supply box has overheated.  It should be allowed to cool for half an hour before being connected to the console once again.  If the power supply is still red, you may just have to ask for a replacement for the power supply, it may just be completely defective.  Microsoft has extended the warranty on Xbox 360s to 3 years, so other than the cost of postage, you should have no additional costs, other than inconvenience.

There are also various downloadable programs and e-books and pamphlets that will give you access to information that can help you to fix your Xbox 360 yourself.  These generally sell for under $30.  These guides will usually offer online support and a money back guarantee.  According to the accompanying literature, these programs will repair the Xbox 360 in one hour or less.

Fix the Red Light on XBox Problem Today

The red light error of the Xbox has reached legendary status, gaining the ominous nickname of the “Red Ring of Death” or the “Red Lights of Death.” Once these three red lights appear, the only function of the Xbox that still works is shutting the power off. These lights appear around the power button and flash on and off, giving a clear warning that something is seriously wrong with the game controller.

As many as half or more of Xboxes may be affected by this error at some time during their supposedly useful life, and many times, the only recourse is to return them to Microsoft for repair or replacement. However, there are a few things you can try before taking this step, which have some chance of restoring your Xbox to operation or at least narrowing down the possible problems to speed the repair step. The flashing red lights indicate some kind of hardware problem, but other clues are needed to determine if the console itself, or the power supply, is malfunctioning. The first thing to do is check the power supply light, which is found on a box at the midst of the electric cord. If it is green, then this is likely to be bad news, and mean that you must get your Xbox repaired. You can still try unplugging the electric cord from both the Xbox and the wall, and then reconnecting, first to the console, then to the wall. If this does not work, then your only recourse may be repair.

If the power supply light is red or not lit at all, then the problem may lie in the cord itself rather than the console proper. The simplest problem in this case is if there was a power surge, which will temporarily scramble the Xbox but will not need repairs. Turning off the console, unplugging it, plugging it in again, and restarting it will almost always prompt it to work properly again if the whole problem was caused by a power surge.

Another way to attempt to fix the Xbox if the power supply light is red is to plug the device into a wall socket in another room. The final step before abandoning the Xbox to the Microsoft technicians is to cool the console thoroughly by turning it off, then placing it in a cool, well-ventilated area for anywhere between half an hour and several hours.

Do not put the console outside in winter or place it in the freezer – this will only cause another type of damage. If the power supply light is still red and the console will not work after this treatment, then it is necessary to send the controller to Microsoft – fortunately, the warranty has been extended for three more years and now provides free repairs for the “Red Ring of Death.”
