There is hardly anything more frustrating and discouraging than to have your screen freeze right in the middle of your favorite video game. A glance at the console power button will generally tell the story – there are three red lights flashing around the button, signaling a very serious problem. This has been a too-common occurrence with the Xbox 360 game console. Until the error is fixed or the console or power supply replaced, the Xbox cannot be used.
One way to handle the problem is to buy one of the many e-books that will explain how to overcome the Three Red Lights Error. These guides generally sell from about $25 to $30, and promise that you will be able to fix your Xbox 360 in an hour, or even less. While these may offer a solution, there are also steps you can take on your own that may fix the problem.

If the Three Red Lights Error is actually signaling that there is defective hardware in your Xbox, you will be unable to fix it yourself. As Microsoft has extended the guarantee to three years, you will probably just be able to return the Xbox for repair or replacement. The only cost in this case will be postage. You will have to wait 2 to 4 weeks for your Xbox 360 to be returned to you, however, so trying the steps below might help you to fix the Xbox yourself.
If the three red lights start flashing, the first thing to do is to look at the power supply box. This has a light on it that will indicate whether, and how, it is working. If the light is green, it means that some power is getting to the power supply, but it may not be getting into the console. Unplug the console from the power supply and the power supply from the wall socket. Then, plug everything back in again, very firmly, as often the problem is caused because the connection was not really made. If the power supply light is still green, but the three red lights are still flashing, there is indeed something wrong in the console and you will have to put in a request for replacement.

However, if after re-plugging, the power supply light is not on at all or is red, it might indicate that the electric supply to the room in which the console is plugged in is insufficient to power the Xbox 360. This can be tested by taking the Xbox to another room and plugging it in there. Do not use a circuit breaker strip; you need to have the current fed directly into the power supply and console to see whether this is the problem.
When the sockets in another room do not solve the problem, the three red lights are still flashing, and the power supply light is still red on not on, it is possible that the power supply has overheated. Unplug it and let it cool for a half hour or more. Once the power supply has cooled, try plugging it into the console again. If the power supply light is still red, the power supply is defective and must be replaced. Once again, you will have to contact Microsoft to arrange for a replacement of the power supply and possibly the console itself.
